The Route 66-era Western Scene Motel, which had fallen into decline in recent years, has been demolished. Yahoo reports that a Texas firm has purchased the property and obtained a permit to redevelop it as a car wash.

Initially called the Western Holiday Motel, the inn was one of several along Cerrillos Road that date back to when roadside motor courts and filling stations had sprung up across the West to satisfy America’s mid-20th century love affair with cross-country adventure.

The new property owners, Lubbock, Texas-based 7B Building and Development, obtained permits to demolish the motel and redevelop it as a car wash in late May.
