WFMJ Channel 21, the NBC affiliate in the Ohio market, reports on conflicting interpretations of what constitutes an essential business. Essential businesses in Ohio can remain operating during the COVID-19 stay-at-home order. Non-essential businesses need to close.

Local County Health Departments are tasked to enforce the order but interpret the order unevenly. To resolve such disparity, a Dispute Resolution Commission was created to make final decisions.

In an order that applies statewide, the commission determined that car wash services were essential but only under certain circumstances:

  • No direct interaction between employee and customer
  • No hand wash or hand dry of vehicle by employee
  • Employees limited to only those needed to operate the business and must maintain social distancing
